We went for buffet on a Sunday. Let me start by saying I’m not Indian but me and bf go out for Indian food quite often all over tri state. I was excited for saffron to open and upon walking in I was impressed by the decor and the cleanliness. However the food was just so bad. Me and bf are big fans of Indian food but this place just didn’t live up to the authentic Indian flavors the cuisine is famous for! The food had zero spicyness that’s so necessary in Indian cuisine. Now I know that many Indian restaurants tone down the spicy to cater to non Indians but instead of toning it down they literally omitted it! I felt robbed of the authentic flavors of Indian food due to lack of spice. The food tasted bland and didn’t have any of those strong aromatic flavors we love in Indian cuisine. They didn’t ask us what we want to drink when we were seated. I had to call out the waiter across the restaurant to get a bottle of sparkling water and he looked like he was doing us a favor. Also he did not bring us glasses for 5 min or so, so essentially I had to take a glass from a neighboring table.
Also, many dishes on the buffet table had random ingredients in large quantities such as corn and peas. It was just way too much and I felt like it was a cheap filler to cut costs. Corn is not synonymous with Indian food in my opinion but more with Hispanic food. The spinach dish had so much corn it overpowered the already non existent flavor and it didn’t taste good I couldn’t eat it. Mattar paneer (can’t exactly remember he name) had way too much peas! It was basically a pea curry lol All I could taste was peas it wasn’t tasty at all. Chicken Tikka masala was bland and it’s my favorite dish usually but at saffron it was so very unexciting and lacked depth of flavor and that boiled chicken flavor was very strong. Chicken curry was a joke. All I could taste was mushy boiled onions and chicken flavor again. Not depth of flavor, no spices, no heat. Nothing zero! Honestly I might be speculating but the food tasted like a non Indian chef cooked it.
Naan was a little too dense and heavy. The dough tasted undercooked not light and thin. It was way too much dough for a naan.
The waiters were stuck on their phone majority of the time we were there and only removed the plates when needed. And not once have they checked up on us to ask how the food was.
Only dishes I liked are the desert. The gulab jamun and ras malai were delicious and I do give them credit for getting the dessert right but it ends there. Great location and restaurant has lots of potential but please redo the menu and bring more authenticity and heat to the dishes.
I felt the prices were very high for buffet. If the food was better and more authentic I wouldn’t mind paying $13.95 a person but this Americanized Indian food just isn’t worth my hard earned money. Waiters could put on a better attitude because honestly this is a restaurant not a funeral home. Hostess was a sweetheart though. Overall saffron has a lot of potential but I until they improve the food I will not come back here. This place might be liked by people who never had Indian food but this place is not for us.
